Skywatch Friday - New Years 2023 Edition

_DSC0205

Hold on everybody, we are almost through all the various holidays. Now we got the big one coming up, New Year's Eve!! Party, party, party, right? You go right ahead and party if you want. I'll be home in my pajamas streaming something with my family and pets. I may not even stay up long enough to see the ball drop! At least here in Tulsa we can see it at 11 pm local time. There is a local brewery here that is sponsoring a New Year's Eve Noon celebration. That is more my speed. New Year's eve during the day I'll probably be hiking if the weather is any good at all and New Year's Day I will be helping the Tulsa Urban Wilderness Coalition on an event on our fabulous Turkey Mountain here in Tulsa.

I wish everybody a safe New Year's Eve and a Healthy and Prosperous 2023.

Woolaroc Sky Tree - Paint Shop

It's a busy time of year right now. Christmas is almost here and much of the USA is being hit by a "Bomb Cyclone." I hope everybody preserves time for themselves and their families and loved ones. That's what counts not running to and fro getting "stocking stuffers" and such as that. To those that celbrate Christmas, I say Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays to everone else. Thank you for your participation in Skywatch Friday. I appreciate it.

Skywatch Friday - 15 December 2022 Edition

DSCN0013

Skywatch photos have such huge variety. Some are anticipated and the photographer sets up ahead of time and waits for the perfect moments. Others like this one, you see when you get out of your car on a shopping trip and you notice the sunset and you snap off a shot or two because all of us skywatchers know that with color on sunsets and sunrises it's all about the now. You might only have seconds to take the shot before the sky turns gray. And of course when you take the shot you may end up with all sorts of "culture," overhead lines, parking lot lots, cars, businesses, buildings. Stuff like that seldom bothers me. It's part of where I live.

Part of what I love about Skywatch Friday is the huge variety of photos that participants post. Deserts, mountains, cities, villages, farms and more are presented and I love them all. I appreciate all who participate!

Tulsa Veterans Day Parade 2009

Welcome to another edition of Skywatch Friday. This Friday is Veterans Day in the US. Tulsa has a pretty big and very nice parade every year. Back in the day, when I worked, I could just leave my office building and watch it from the sidewalk. It was always very uplifting to see our Veterans honored. Really though, don't we honor everybody who fought for freedom for their country?

Skywatch Friday - Halloween 2022 Edition!!

Welcome to another edition of Skywatch Friday. A big Thank You to all who participate. Autumn is my favorite season. In northeast Oklahoma we get great weather for months during Fall. Halloween is a great holiday. You don't have to buy anybody anything, the weather is still good, and nobody feels sad for you if you can't make it home for the holiday.

I just love autumn. In Oklahoma it is very long and is the state's best season. Warm days, cool nights, can't beat it.

Our family is going on vacation soon. I'll have SWF set up for next Thursday as usual. I may not be visiting as much while we are gone but I'll be back! We are going to the beach so hopefully I'll have all sorts of nice Skywatch photos.

Skywatch Friday - 8 September 2022 Edition

This is the monarch waystation on Tulsa's Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness Area. I volunteered to water it this past year. So when there is no rain for several days I show up and string about three long hoses together and water it for 30 to 60 minutes depending on how hot it is, how much it has rained recently, etc. We plant only native plants so I look at my job as supplementing nature. I am just trying to keep the plants from dying. So far I have seen one monarch butterfly and a whole lot of swallowtails and loads of bees, hornets, and wasps. I've talked to lots of curious people and sprayed water on a few very hot mountain bikers who stopped. It's been fun! It goes on year round.

I'm just glad the plants haven't died. There is an event called Monarchs on the Mountain later this month. I'd feel terrible if all the plants had died!

The weather turned cool on Wednesday which is good in a way because many of the schools here in Oklahoma are starting up. Wouldn't want the youngsters in school when it is sunny and dry outside, right? Best that it be drizzly and cool so they can concentrate on their studies. I swear, when I was a kid, the greatest day of the year was the day they let school out for the summer. The worst day was generally about the second week after classes started. The teachers had enough of us by then so no more smiles and indulgences the rest of the year. I will admit I had pretty good teachers except for my first grade teacher in Payson, Arizona. Julia Randall, I had her in like her 46th year of over a 50 year teaching career. She literally started teaching before Arizona was a state. She was the one who invented shock and awe. Sorry, I digress but as you can tell, 61 years later, I am still traumatized by the start of my academic career.

First Skywatch of August 2022- Rolling with the Weather

Untitled

We had a break from the hot weather. Several days of rain and low temperatures!! It was great, our brown grass greened up and I got a chance to cut it, and here I am four days later and it needs cut again. Is there any way we can have green grass that doesn't grow or need watered? Check on that and then check back with me. And I don't want to hear about astroturf, indoor/outdoor carpet or any of that.

Seriously though I have decided to just roll with the weather. I don't want to spend all my time inside so I just make allowances and go do outside what I normally want to do, just avoiding the hottest part of the day and taking lots of water. Do you roll with your weather? How do you do it?

Skywatch Friday - Geronimo's Birthday Edition

IMG_0093
Years ago, my father and I tracked down Geronimo's grave out in the middle of nowhere on the sprawling US Army Base at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. We got there right at the last light of day.

The Apache chief Geronimo was born on June 16, 1829 in what is now Arizona. He died February 17, 1909 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He fought the United States and Mexican Armies for years. He finally surrendered in 1886 and spent the rest of his life as a  prisoner of war under some pretty loose restrictions. Check out more here.

Skywatch Friday - 2 June 2022

Untitled
A "Cowboy Church" in Antlers, OK USA

Here in the United States, summer is generally meant to start the week after Memorial Day at the end of May. School is out, the swimming pools open, and families start hitting the road for vacations and reunions. Gasoline over $5 a gallon is going to put a damper on that but we are flying free after two plus years of lockdowns and staying home.

I hope everybody is safe out there. I'm continuing to think about Ukraine under the brutal invasion. I'm also praying that the USA can come to some sort of measures to help prevent mass murder. Enough is enough. A couple hours after I put this post together (on Wednesday) we had a mass shooting event here in Tulsa at a hospital with four innocents murdered and the shooter killed himself.

A pond with ducks on Tulsa's Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness Area

I got up this morning and instead of going to my regular Thursday morning yoga class I decided to go on a bike ride. Yesterday was an errand day and I was really wanting some outside time and it has been hot so I needed to go in the morning because I am a pansy like that. I was on the incoming leg of my ride and my thoughts ventured to Skywatch Friday and then it struck me. That's today!!! I guess in these hot hazy days my mind got a little hot and hazy as well so I hurried on back to the car, came home, showered and sat down to the computer. I'll have this done with about 10 minutes to spare. It's been a while since I missed a post and I don't want to start now.

_DSC0363

Cindo de Mayo (May 5th) is a holiday in Mexico celebrating their army's victory of the French Army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It is not Mexico's Independence Day, that is on September 16, 1810. Strangely enough, I read that Cinco de Mayo may be more popular in the USA than in Mexico.
